Dear Kate, 

My many and warm thanks for asking me to direct the Columbia summer institute. Please do convey my appreciation too to the members of the Search Committee - I don't know them well but I felt a great liking for them all that day in Low Library. (There's more than a slogan to sisterhood!). I've got to decline for reasons that are obvious - deadlines, research, course revision, children, an old summer place that we've just acquired, etc., etc. I can't take on the teaching either and wish I could suggest someone. Everyone I know who might be qualified in Women's History seems to be out-of-touch or otherwise unavailable. 

About Elly on the Executive Committee, I'm all for it. I was bothered by her exclusion because I think she was a central figure
